Former Michigan coach accused of hacking the accounts of over 3,000 female athletes

Former Michigan and Baltimore Ravens assistant coach Matt Weiss pleaded guilty to 24 counts of unauthorized computer access and aggravated identity theft on Monday in his Detroit arrest. According to ESPN.

In the 14-page indictment, prosecutors said Weiss, 42, could access social media, emails and iCloud accounts of mostly 3,300 female athletes to download “personal, intimate photos that have not been published.”

Weiss' alleged crimes occurred between 2015 and during his time with the Ravens from Michigan in 2023, but include “state torts of privacy invasion” in Michigan, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Michigan fired Weiss as co-attack coordinator in January 2023 after the university discovered a computer account that it had “improperly accessed” within the football facility Schembechler Hall.

Westmont College, a 1,200-student Christian liberal arts school overlooking Santa Barbara, California, is one of the institutions that Weiss had an account that allegedly invaded.

Jason Tavares, director of the school's institutional resilience, said the FBI had contacted victims related to Westmont.

“The information used in this investigation was made with the consent of the victim named in this indictment,” Tavares said.

“When I was talking to the FBI, they said it wasn't just us, it wasn't just us, but some schools.”

Weiss, a married father who is a three-person and a Vanderbilt alumnus, allegedly gained access to data through Keffer Development Services, a third-party contractor who holds medical information for around 150,000 athletes at around 100 schools, including Westmont, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors said Weiss is accusing his victims of “their school affiliation, athletic history, physical characteristics and physical characteristics.”

Two former Michigan athletes, a gymnast, a gymnast and a soccer player filed a class action lawsuit against Weiss, the university, its regent committee and Keffer Development Services for the violation, ESPN said.

His lawyer declined to comment on ESPN after his arrest.

Keffer also declined to comment on ESPN.
