Most Americans in the new poll say that wealthy and large corporations benefit most from President Trump’s tariffs on a variety of import and trade policies.
In the latest CBS News/YouGov opinion released on Sunday, 74% of respondents said Trump’s tariffs and trade policies would benefit the wealthy, while 71% said they would benefit the big corporations. Half of the Americans who voted said it would benefit the US automotive industry.
Still, 42% of respondents believe that workers and the middle class are benefiting from tariffs, while 45% say they benefit unions. 39% said tariffs would benefit small businesses.
Financial markets experienced whiplash after the impact of Trump’s economic agenda. First, the economy took a dramatic downfall last week alongside the “mutual” tariffs on dozens of countries, with the president implementing flat 10% tariffs on all goods coming to the country.
But by Wednesday, Trump temporarily suspends most tariffs, increasing tariffs on Chinese goods by 125%, in addition to the 20% mandate imposed on the world’s second-largest economy earlier this year.
As the number of respondents increases, he said Trump’s policies are financially worsening. In the latest poll, 49% of respondents said they had an increase of 7 points since March, while 30% said they were the same, a 5 points decrease. 23% said Trump’s policies are making them better financially, down two points since March.
The downward trend continues in Trump’s assessment of his economy’s handling. The poll found 44% of respondents approved Trump’s economic handling, a 7-point drop since the beginning of March, and 56% disapproved Trump’s economic management, with a 7-point increase.
The poll was conducted on 2,410 US adults from April 8th to 11th, with an error of 2.4 points.
