NYC restaurateur Keith McNally revealed an A-list celebrities who were once “incredibly rude” to one of his servers, urging them to shed tears.
McNally, which owns more than 12 hotspot eateries in Manhattan (including Balthazar, Pastis and Minetta taverns), recalled in the 1970s when he worked as general manager at the iconic One Fifth Restaurant.
Excerpt Grab Street from New York Magazine has been acquired McNally, in his upcoming memoir, “I Regret Almost Everything: Memoirs,” was ashamed of the name and embarrassment of singer Patti Smith, who frequently visited Italian eateries that closed in February.
McNally revealed that the “The Night The Night” singer often dined at the hotspot with her then-boyfriend, photographer Robert Maplethorpe.
The duo was often joined by Samwagstaff, formerly of Mapplethorpe, who lived in an apartment above an Italian joint.
“Smith and Mapplethorpe can be very difficult to wait,” writes McNally.
“Unfortunately, Smith was very rude to the server. It’s impossible to hear Patty Smith’s song today, not remembering that she had forgotten to put bread on the table,” he insisted.
Still, McNally pointed out that Mapplethorpe “never tried to underestimate Waitstaff” unlike the four-time Grammy nominee.
The excerpt urged several other social media users to share their experiences crossing the path with singer 78.
“He’s not lying about Patty Smith,” one wrote in the comments section of New York Magazine. Instagram posts. “I used to work at a party with her rudeness years ago.”
“Patty Smith is rude to the server’s comments. It’s just my heart has broken,” another wrote, but the third added that he was “shocked” to learn that Smith is not friendly to the server.
Still, some people rushed to the singer’s defense.
“I know people who spent time with her for the past few years. She was as sweet as possible… I think she’s become mellow… or that waiter was very sensitive,” one person wrote.
I added another one. [sic] With her? The Lord knows I have my bad moments. ”
In 2022, McNally made the headline after intuitively banning James Corden from eating at his NYC restaurant, Balthazar, following his boolean actions against the staff of the British comedian.

McNally later revealed that Corden had called on him to apologize, lifting the initial ban.
“I regret almost everything: Memoirs” is expected to hit the shelf on May 6th.
