Justin Thomas will now try to do something that hasn’t happened this season on PGA Tour

Justin Thomas fired 61 to begin the RBC legacy, and naturally held the first round lead. This is the lowest opening round score ever, as it is worth tied with the highest 18-hole scorer in the RBC (Cam Smith was 62 in 2021).

Going wire-to-wire in the sport you are tasked with doing so is never easy. We are deep enough for PGA Tour season and have legal sample sizes to use some things… including this.

After holding the opening round lead through 16 starts on the tour this season, the player JT himself has not been successful.

Overall, Thomas turns this type of lead into a final victory, 11-11. The last thing he cashed out was his last opening round lead period in 2019, but the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open. He was eventually tied to 62nd place.

If Thomas goes to win this weekend, he will have to go through some tough competition to do so. Russell Henry, the winner of another signing event at API this season, and Scotty Scheffler, who is still hoping for the first victory of the season, are both three-strokes. Wyndham Clark, who finished T3 at last year’s event, has one more behind them. Justin Rose is still playing well following his playoff loss to Rory McIlroy last week at the Masters, so it’s just two strokes from there.

The point is… golf is pretty good, people.
