The spouse of a Maryland man who was unintentionally deported by the US government to a high-security prison in El Salvador defended her husband, acknowledging that she had sought a civil protection order four years prior.
“After enduring domestic violence in my prior relationship, I acted cautiously regarding my disagreements with Kilmer in an attempt to obtain a civil protection order in case situations escalated. However, things did not worsen, and I couldn’t complete the civil court process. Several statements outlet on Wednesday.
Sula criticized the administration of President Trump after the US government recently disclosed an application from 2021.
The order barred Abrego Garcia from contacting her, and the Salvadoran citizens were warned not to harm her.
“In the coming years, our marriage has only grown stronger. Nobody is flawless, and marriage is not without its flaws,” Sula remarked. “But that does not excuse the actions of ICE in hastening his deportation to a country where he should be safeguarded from removal.”
“Kilmer has consistently been a caring partner and father, and I will continue to support him and pursue justice on his behalf,” she stated.
The Department of Homeland Security made the protected order public on Wednesday.
Abrego Garcia was deported to a maximum-security facility in El Salvador last month after the Justice Department (DOJ) deemed it an “administrative mistake.” The US government claims Abrego Garcia is a violent criminal and a member of the MS-13 gang, based on information provided by informants in 2019. He has not faced any criminal charges.
Sula, Abrego Garcia, and his attorneys refuted the allegation that he was affiliated with a transnational gang labeled as a terrorist organization by the US.
On Thursday, the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined to lift a judicial order that the administration “prompted” the return of Abrego Garcia and criticized the DOJ in its ruling.
“The relief sought by the government is extraordinary and untimely. We fully acknowledge the substantial claims of enforcement authority under Article II, yet please do not undermine the significant efforts of the district court to carry out the Supreme Court’s recent verdict.”
The White House elevated the release of Sula’s protection order on Wednesday, targeting Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.).
White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt expressed that it was “alarming” that Van Hollen and Democrats endorsed their travel to Senator El Salvador, asserting that “they cannot dismiss reason and empathy for their own constituents and our citizens.”
“Nobody understands this better than Patty Morin, the woman beside me, whose beautiful daughter Rachel was tragically killed in August 2023 by an illegal alien,” Levitt stated on Wednesday.
