The Trump administration placed most of Americaorps full-time employees on administrative leave Wednesday as they moved to reorganize Bill Clinton-era volunteer agencies.
The independent federal agency was established by Congress in 1993 to connect young Americans with community service opportunities and provided wages of around $4,000, residential accommodation, food and higher education grants. New York Times It has been reported.
“This is the time to admit that it is a failed program that requires a complete overhaul or elimination.”
Despite receiving around $1 billion a year, Americaorps has failed its eighth consecutive audits.
Burgess Owens (R-UTAH) councillor in December defendant An institution with a “long history of abuse of taxpayer dollars.”
“In 2023, Americaorps Inspector General published a “Management Issues” report detailing the key challenges facing Americaorps. This includes not being able to detect fraud. There is no real idea that Americaorps can get a clean audit again.
He called for Americaorps to be in the “chopping block” of the Ministry of Government Efficiency, arguing that while “they can’t continue to meet basic accountability standards,” they should not receive any further taxpayer money.
“We can tell Americaorps to modernize and reform until our faces turn blue, but nothing will change unless we realize that the system is not built on a flawed idea. This is the time to acknowledge that it is a failed program that requires a complete overhaul or elimination,” Owens said.
Like many other federal agencies in recent years, Americaorps has permeated awakened ideologies, including climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Fox News Digital reported in its agency’s 2024 annual management report that “progress in racial and economic equity” was listed as one of its key priorities.
“Americorps has a decades of commitment to promoting racial and economic equity through national services and volunteer work,” the report read. “These efforts are designed to expand the pathway to opportunities for all Americans. Racial and economic equity is central to the planning and implementation of all American priorities, ensuring that Americaorps members and volunteers reflect the diversity of the American people and the communities they serve.”
Owens supports the exclusion of Americans, but Trump administration officials told news outlets that agents will receive an operational reset but will continue to exist.
On Wednesday, the White House decided how to restructure the agency by placing 75% of Americaorps full-time employees (535 out of 700 staff) during their administrative leave. Additionally, the agency contract worth approximately $250 million has ended.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, D., said Thursday that the state will file a lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop restructuring efforts.
He wrote in post In X, “Doge’s actions to dismantle Americaorps threaten vulnerable Californians, disaster response and recovery, and economic opportunities.”
“California will be sued to stop this,” Newsom concluded.
Another thing statementhe called Trump’s actions “the middle finger of a volunteer serving fellow Americans.”
Earlier this week, Newsom filed a lawsuit against Trump to stop the administration from imposing an increase in tariffs. The governor has set aside $50 million to challenge the current administration.
