(News Nation) – Research monkeys used in tuberculosis research faced the prospect of euthanizing them after the Trump administration pulled out the funds Harvard Universitybut now charities are offering help.
Dr. Sarah Fortune from Harvard University warned that rhesus macaque subjects could be euthanized due to the freezing of federal grants. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine are studying primates as part of a broader project coordinated by Harvard University.
on friday, Boston Globe reported California-based Open Fillanthropi has approved a $500,000 grant to support research work in Pennsylvania.
Fortune said she was happy to learn about the gift, but people for the ethical treatment of animals criticized her for raising ghosts to euthanize animals. PETA, opposed to the use of animals for research, said the monkeys may have been given to caretakers and sanctuaries.
“Animal experiments cannot produce human treatments or treatments. They are cruel and there are ways to relate to superior humans.” The group said in a news release.
Harvard refuses to follow various instructions from the Trump administration as a condition for receiving the grant. Federal officials have frozen 1 billion people with research funding.
