Van Hollen: “I’m Not Defending Abrego Garcia, But His Right to Due Process!”

Van Hollen on Abrego Garcia: 'I am not defending the man. I'm defending the rights of this man to due process'

Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) supported initiatives to safeguard Kilmer Abrego Garcia’s rights on Sunday, even amid serious accusations emerging against Maryland residents who were deported, alongside emphasizing his questionable legal history.

In a conversation with ABC News “This Week,” anchor Jonathan Carle inquired about “some serious allegations of mistreatment.”

“Certainly, everyone in this nation possesses rights, including undocumented individuals. But are you concerned about aligning strongly with someone who has a dubious record?” Carle questioned.

Van Hollen mentioned that he was advocating for the principles rather than Abrego Garcia’s record.

“I’m not standing up for that individual. I’m advocating for his rights within a valid legal framework,” Van Hollen stated. “And the Trump administration acknowledged in court that he was wrongly detained and unlawfully deported.”

“My purpose is to uphold the rule of law because if I deny it to him, I jeopardize it for everyone else,” he added.

This week, Van Hollen visited El Salvador to assess the situation of Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who resided with his spouse in Maryland and was sent to a notorious confinement center in El Salvador.

Officials from the Trump administration previously asserted he was incorrectly sent to El Salvador but have recently intensified claims that Abrego Garcia is linked to gang activities.

Van Hollen stated that the administration should present their allegations in a legal setting.

“The Trump administration is attempting to shift the narrative. They are trying to create distractions. They should present the facts and take it to court. They stated that Judge Xinis, the district court judge in this case, did not provide any evidence connecting Abrego Garcia to MS-13 or similar activities.

“Thus, the president, the Republicans, and all involved should take their evidence to court. Avoid discussing it solely on social media,” he remarked.

Van Hollen explicitly mentioned concerns regarding Abrego Garcia’s wife, underscoring that she is the most vocal advocate for his return.

“Regarding his spouse, she implores us all to bring him home to respect his rights,” Van Hollen stated.

Jennifer Vasquez Sula, spouse of Abrego Garcia, expressed that Van Hollen’s actions have fulfilled the prayers of her and her children.

“My prayers and those of my children have been heard. The efforts of my family and community to secure justice are recognized because I know my husband is alive,” Sula commented in a previous statement.

“We still have numerous questions, hopes, and fears. We will continue to pray and advocate for Kilmer’s return,” she stated.
