South Carolina’s liberal arts university could begin the process of closure by the end of April, which has a history of nearly two centuries.
Limestone University, a private Christian liberal arts college in Gaffney, previously known as Limestone College, was founded in 1845 as one of the nation’s first women’s universities. On April 22nd, online-only instruction or closure was made entirely before the semester was over.
The Limestone University board of trustees shared the emergency message last week on its website that announced the emergency. This cites declining national enrollment, rising costs, and other structural challenges that liberal arts colleges face disproportionately.
“The board’s priorities are to maintain the limestone mission of education and services on campus, as well as online. But without this financial lifeline, there is no choice but to move all your businesses online, meaning closing the physical campus.
According to a press release, the $6 million directed by the board, which said it was necessary, will help create long-term solutions with operational costs and resources.
The university was a particularly big hit between 2022 and 2023, operating at a deficit of $12.6 million. Propublica.
Both students and locals are beginning to panic as the idea of Gaffney, a limestone university-free, may soon become a reality.
“Psychological and emotional sacrifices are equally profound. Limestone was a point of pride, tradition and inspiration for our residents. It opened the door for countless local students and families. Many of them were first generation college students, who helped shape their dreams into reality.

Others were blinded by the announcements of councillors, including university staff.
“I’m kind of scared. I don’t really know what’s going to happen or what’s going on, like the next step, but we need to go one step at a time, understand what we’re going to do for ourselves, and if we have to, say goodbye to each other.” WJBF.
Many students have posted videos on Tiktok and are asking people to lend a hand to influencers like Mr. Beast, too, have taken them to social media to donate.
Limestone University is already in contact with the NCAA and will hold a “Reverse College Fair” on April 25th, allowing current students to explore other universities.
