Shocking deep sea discovery catches baby colossal squid on camera

Researchers have made prominent discoveries deep in Atlantic waters off the coast of the Southern Sandwich Islands.

According to the Associated Press, the Schmidt Ocean Institute announced that it had discovered a giant squid while searching for new marine life.

The boy’s squid extends to about a foot long, 1,968 feet deep.

Upon full growth, the adult giant squid can reach up to 23 feet or the size of a small fire truck, the AP said.

According to Oceana, the giant squid, or Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, is “the largest invertebrate on the planet.”

“It also has the greatest eye of any animal, and is bigger than the great whale.”

Oceana says the species is “probably rare in nature.”

Kat Bolstad, a researcher at the Auckland Institute of Technology squid, helped identify the species.

“We really love seeing a young giant squid in the first place. This animal is so beautiful,” Bolstad said.

She added that researchers are testing a variety of cameras in the hopes of catching a giant adult squid.
