No matter what Giants do with No. 3 pick, it will come with QB questions

It’s the Giants’ current state, and can save one of the most dynamic defensive players from coming out of the NFL draft for quite some time, but if that’s the case, the chorus serenades the movement and quickly turns into another song. What happens like this:

But what about quarterbacks?

It’s useless to fight that. If a team doesn’t have a future quarterback on its roster, finding it is almost always a priority, and speculation about who that young quarterback is ramping and unforgiving.

The Giants have eight picks over the next three days, starting on the first round Thursday night and owning the third pick.

If that choice turns out to be Pennsylvania’s Edge Rush Abdul Carter, the giants will add what they’re expecting to be on their roster.

No one asks the second question that Carter deserves such a high-ranking draft status.

But if Shedure Sanders is available and taken over by the Giants – that’s probably the scenario – as Sanders is considered the second-place quarterback in this draft class (Camward is expected to be number one for Titan), the Giants have invested in incredible resources and manpower to scout for the past eight months.

General Manager Joe Shane vowed not to select a quarterback just to check the box. But he knows that the fans are restless and have not acquired a quarterback in any of the first three drafts with the Giants.

He also knows he signed two veterans in that position – Russell Wilson, 36, and Jameis Winston, 31 – and neither of them may be on the team in 2026.

Yes, Shane hopes and intends to have a rookie quarterback in this draft. He only does it if he has identified what he believes makes sense, and the move could come on the first day of the draft.

The Giants have 34 picks, their second choice in the second round, which is a valuable part of the real estate draft. They showed patience and managed to get a quarterback there.

“It has some depth to it,” Shane said of this year’s quarterback class. “So there are great players for different reasons, different ages, different playtime experiences. This draft has a quarterback who plays in the league and becomes a starter.”

Are these players considered the future of franchise quarterbacks?

“Yeah, I’m going to say that,” Shane said.

The Browns in No. 2 appear to be trapped in cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter, which would set the Giants to get Carter. He has lost 12 sacks and 23.5 tackles this past season, and is considered to be the next great pass rush to enter the NFL.

This is not an obvious need, as the Giants already have Brian Burns and Cavon Tibode as their starting edge rush. However, they were 3-14 in 2024, but introducing impact players in premium positions is always a healthy strategy.

Thibodeaux, who finished fifth overall in 2022, will enter his final year on his contract, but the Giants could potentially win a fifth-year option.

“So if there’s a blue chip or a generational talent, or something you can’t pass on, you wouldn’t pass on that type of player, even if you already have a starter in that position,” Shane said. “If you need it, when… you can make a mistake. I want to get in so I can go back to the corner where I have to take a certain position and have the best players available.”

This is not considered a strong quarterback class. The giants are trying to wash away the country and uncover every amount of information about these outlooks.

Sanders is an accurate pocket passerby, only an average athlete, with a confident streak of just a mile wide.

Dart set up records in Ole Miss, but did not play on pro-style attacks. Tyler Schaff is nearly 26 years old, but has rocket arms and great maturity. Jalen Milroe is a top athlete and runner, but a very inconsistent passerby. There’s Kyle McCord and Will Howard.

No one has to start immediately after the giant comes.

Other needs? Day 2 (Rounds 2 and 3) seems to be the right place for a defensive tackle pairing with Dexter Lawrence. Young security guards are welcomed with blood flow on the depth chart. They can use more talent on inside linebackers, wide receivers, safety and tight ends.

Every position matters – but more than anything, the quarterback.
