The Department of Education (ED) began researching the UC Berkeley on Friday into its relationship with Chinese sources, the Daily Caller News Foundation learned.
Ed allegedly failed to report the “normal millions of dollars” the university received from foreign governments over the years, prompting the department to start recording requests, DCNF reported. Foreign funding is about schools having “deep engagement with Chinese organizations” and may share information about research and “critical technologies.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday calling for more transparency in foreign contributions accepted by American universities. The order calls on Education Secretary Linda McMahon to seek information from universities regarding the sources and purposes of foreign funding, make such details available to the public, and also imposes the U.S. Attorney General to enforce disclosures and hold schools accountable. UC Berkeley did not immediately respond to DCNF’s request for comment.
