The rain gave the Yankees an extra day to marinate Devin Williams’ decision.
However, after Williams blew a save in nine innings, his struggle continued, manager Aaron Boone kept the door open due to a change in the role of Closer, just a month after the season.
“We’re still going to talk about this,” Boone said Saturday morning after Williams was asked if he was still close to him after his match against the Blue Jays was postponed due to bad weather threats. “I haven’t seen Devin yet.
“We try to do the best for our team and Devin, knowing that, we hope we can get through this uplift in the road and still be great.”
Williams’ ERA grew to 11.25 in his first 10 appearances as a Yankee when he gave up three runs on Friday night and led his ninth lead to a 4-2 loss, 2-1.
Right-handed trademark ChangeUp has been much more hidden this season than in the past few years, and he has struggled with his orders, leaving him with a bad number.
Asked about the incident to keep Williams closer, Boone pointed to his track record.
“He was one of the dominant closers in the league,” Boone said. “I know the results aren’t great yet. There’s a lot of them there. ChangeUp’s profile is still there. Clearly the batters were successful. [against it]. He hasn’t shaking or missed it. He’s a little behind. Once he starts to flip it over and get some count leverage, he expects to return to the closer he controls. ”
The fanbase quickly lost patience in two All-Stars that it acquired from the brewers in its final offseason, saying, “We want it.” [Luke] Weaver” boo Williams from the mound on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Williams appeared to have lost the answer on Friday, simply saying, “Nothing is working now.”
Asked if he was worried about where Williams’ confidence was, Boone spoke around.
“I start with the baseline, he has all the equipment that’s great at this,” Boone said. “It’s a good place to start. This isn’t a guy past his prime. This is in the middle and has a track record of domination as well as success.
“So when you have that baseline, there’s always a way to get out and there’s always a way to get there, so we’ll lean on it and try to help him unleash it.
