Greenland’s Prime Minister Slams the U.S.: ‘We’re Not for Sale to Just Anyone!’

Greenland prime minister says US has 'not been respectful', island can't be bought by 'just anyone'

The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens Frederick Nielsen, remarked on Sunday that he found the way the US expressed interest in acquiring the country to be “disrespectful.”

“We have no regard for US consultations,” he stated during a press conference near Copenhagen, alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredericksen.

“The language used lacks respect, which is why we require a united front in this situation,” he further commented.

Nielsen emphasized that Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, “will never be treated as an asset available for purchase.”

This declaration was made during Nielsen’s three-day visit to Denmark, where leaders from both nations aim to enhance collaboration regarding President Trump’s proposed acquisition of the territory.

“Denmark is committed to investing in Greenlandic society. Our motivation goes beyond historical ties; it stems from our role in the (Denmark’s) federation,” Fredericksen stated.

“Naturally, we are eager to keep investing in the Greenland Association,” she added.

When questioned about a potential meeting with Trump, the Danish prime minister replied, “We are always open to meeting with the US president.”

“We certainly wish to,” she continued. “However, it has been made very clear what the (Danish Federation) stance is regarding all regions of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
