Secretary of State Marco Rubio argued that three minor U.S. citizens under the age of 10, and three citizens with IV cancer, were deported without justice, calling the charges “misleading.”
The Washington Post reported that three American citizens from two different families, ages 2, 4 and 7, were deported along with their mothers at the Louisiana facility on Friday. The report alleges that the 4-year-old child suffered from stage 4 cancer and the family’s lawyers said the mother had no way of contacting the doctor. Rubio opposed the claim that the children were deported and instead chose to take the child with him by the mother of a child who was not legally in the country.
“That’s a misleading headline. Three US citizens, ages 4, 7 and 2, were not deported. The mother was legally deported, and the children went with their mother. They can go back to their father or who they want to assume. It’s not true,” Rubio said.

However, US District Judge Terry A. Dauty did not believe the federal government’s claim that children were not actually deported. In response to an emergency order filed Thursday night by the father of a two-year-old girl, the judge issued an order expressing “strong suspicion that the government had just deported US citizens without a meaningful process.” The infant can bring his mother to the immigration council and stay in a community called the Intensive Supervisory Emergency Program, argued by the family lawyer.
“The government argues that this is all okay because the mother wants the child to be deported with her, but the courts don’t know that,” wrote Dhoty.
The family lawyer says the girl’s father could only tell her mother for a minute before the phone was suddenly terminated by the ice agent, and the girl was shipped to Honduras the next morning with her mother.

Rubio remained firm that the sole target of deportation was illegally a US mother and that the children would be welcome to return if their father or another appropriate guardian took their responsibility.

“If someone is illegally deported to this country, illegally. If the person is with a two-year-old and says they want to take the child, then there are two options. Of course, you can take the child. Mother has been deported,” Rubio said.
