On Sunday, President Trump called on Republicans to remove the protesters at City Hall, stating they should be “swiftly kicked out” from the venue, and GOP officials hosting the gathering “should not be accommodating to them.”
In a statement regarding the True Society, Trump criticized Republican members of Congress for “investing their wealth to disrupt the town hall” and “radical left Democrats.”
“These brave patriot politicians should not show them kindness. They need to urgently escort them out of the venue. They are destroyers and instigators,” Trump commented.
Trump urged Republicans to maintain their stance at City Hall to counter the notion that members of the Presidential Party were voicing concerns at public gatherings.
“You have to let the audience understand your stance, or they may believe they’re Republicans and that the party faces opposition,” Trump expressed in his statement. “There’s nothing but love and unity. Republicans are pleased with our nation’s direction. We all cherish America!”
Comments have prompted members to recommend against conducting personal city halls, as numerous Republican lawmakers have faced intense backlash over Trump’s administration’s policies in recent months following recent resistance to city halls, which some party leaders suggest that “paid protesters” and Democratic activists could dominate.
Nevertheless, many Republican lawmakers persist in hosting in-person gatherings for their constituents. At least six individuals were removed during Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) City Hall event earlier this month. Three individuals were arrested, including two people who were incapacitated with stun guns by police.
Last week, Rep. Byron Donald (R-FLA.) faced several tense moments at the event as he defended some of Trump’s policies. He also received applause from portions of the audience.
Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) engaged in a heated exchange at City Hall earlier this month where he was questioned last month about the status of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a resident of Maryland and native of Salvador.
