Lord Baden Powell, the original founder of the scouting movement in the early 1900s, modeled “scouts” after the military. Today, Scouting America encourages boys to “do fun together” in a “welcome and safe environment where scouts can freely express themselves.”

Since 2010, teenage boys have experienced it 161% increase in depression. In 2023, US Census Bureau data revealed that around 18 million American children (unfortunately one in four) did not have an active father in their homes.
Public schools exchanged expectations for mental strength and admiration for “equitable and safe space” and “restorative discipline.” Youth sports teams will hand out participating trophies in the name of “inclusiveness.” The American Library Association is openly supporting Drug Queen Story Hour for Kids. And until recently, military enlistment in the United States hit a record low.
From higher dropout rates and mental health struggles to the pressure to navigate rapidly changing social expectations, many boys and young men are looking for guidance, connections and purpose. One important way to address these challenges is to invest in male-centric programs that promote healthy masculinity, along with resources to encourage young men to be the best.
For decades, organizations like Boy Scouts have given boys a structured environment where they can develop a sense of leadership, resilience and a strong sense of identity. These types of programs offer more than just outdoor skills. They promote mentorship, responsibility, and services to others, which are essential elements of personal development, and provide the precise value that many of today’s youth culture lack. By reconnecting the boys with the legacy of American pioneers, inventors, politicians and guardians, we prepare ourselves to lead them with strength and become principled men with the capacity to make a difference in our communities and countries.
