Department Store Harrods Is Latest UK Retailer To Be Hit By Cyber Attack

London:

Harrods, a London department store, said on Thursday the hackers tried to break into the system. This is the third most popular cyberattack on British retailers in two weeks following the incident in Marks & Spencer and the cooperative group.

British companies, public agencies and agencies have been hit by a wave of cyberattacks in recent years, causing tens of millions of pounds, often months of disruption.

“We have recently experienced attempts to gain unauthorized access to parts of our system,” said a statement from Harrods, owned by the Qatar Investment Authority.

“Our veteran IT security team has taken immediate and proactive steps to keep our systems safe, resulting in limited internet access on our sites today.”

He said all sites are open, including London's flagship Knightsbridge Store, H Beauty Store and airport stores, and customers can continue shopping online.

The Harrods and Co-op incident appears to have less impact than an attack on M&S, one of the UK's most well-known retailers.

The attack on M&S came even in the warmer UK climate where retailers usually report increased demand for summer clothing, fresh food and drinks. Some stores also have an impact on the availability of some foods.

The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) works with both M&S and Co-Op, while the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Division and the National Crime Agency (NCA) are investigating M&S attacks.

Citing multiple sources, technology specialist site BleepingComputer said the ransomware attack that encrypted M&S servers is believed to have been carried out by a hacking group known as “scattered spiders.”
