Two “Hollywood-style” videos uploaded and released by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have been widely shared to seduce Chinese citizens who are interested in becoming opposition and are spying for the US government.

In May 2023, former President Joe Biden's CIA similarly released recruitment videos produced online as part of the initiative, taking advantage of what authorities believed was an “unprecedented” opportunity to persuade Russians to share the country's secrets.
Meanwhile, both videos in Mandarin Language are about three minutes long, and the CIA aims to identify future Chinese intelligence operatives who are trying to work with the US government.
“One of the CIA's main roles is to gather information for the president and policymakers,” CIA director John Ratcliffe told the press. “One way we do it is to employ assets that help us steal secrets.”
YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and X are one of the CIA's social media platforms where videos are currently live.
The senior leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is one of the target audiences who believe that the US intelligence agency is open to talking to them. This is because many of these leaders have witnessed their colleagues being rejected, imprisoned, or “disappeared” completely.
At the end of the video, viewers are told to “know your destiny in your hands.”
“This video explains to them how they contact the CIA through our dark website and have the ability to improve their safety and well-being, and their family,” Ratcliffe said.
China was the strongest economic and political enemy in the United States, and served as director of the National Intelligence Bureau in the first Trump administration, according to Ratcliffe.
Meanwhile, the second recruiting video is directed at lower-ranked officers within the Chinese Communist Party. Ratcliffe argues that while these individuals often face limited prospects for career progress, party elites disproportionately enjoy the financial rewards of their efforts.
“Heaven helps those who help themselves. Your destiny is in your control,” the video finally says.
The CIA director expressed confidence that the video will bypass China's “great firewall” and reach its intended audience within the mainland. He also noted that previous CIA releases (mandarin language instructions to access agents via the dark web) have reached millions.
The agency's communication channels remain open, urging Chinese citizens to move forward, but ensuring that all conversations are strictly secret.
“We're moving forward and we're putting more distance between the US and China early in the Trump administration and that's going to continue,” he pointed out.
