Noncitizen Accused of Rape Became Cop in CA After Previous Arrest

California's Democratic government Gavin Newsom signed a law in 2022 that removed the requirement for state police, highway patrols and corrections officers to become US citizens or permanent residents.

Now, Felipegomez, a foreigner who was hired by the Belmont Police Station after the law came into effect in 2023, was arrested last week on suspicion of rape. It has been reported. The Brazilian citizen was reportedly hired in 2017 despite being previously arrested for domestic violence.

Redwood Police Department arrested Gomez at the Belmont Police Department headquarters on April 22nd, Sergeant RCPD arrested Gomez. Victor Figueroa said. Gomez is accused of violating Criminal Code 261(a)(1). According to the report, consent cannot be given due to a mental disorder or developmental or physical disorder.

Gomez was later booked at the main jail in the San Mateo County office and released on a $100,000 bond. Belmont Police Lt. Colonel said Gomez was finished the day after his arrest, the report said.

Gomez was sworn in at a Belmont City Council ceremony on December 10th. During the ceremony, Belmont Police Chief Ken Stenquist said Gomez was in the Brazilian Air Force and was working as an air force police.

“He is a full-time police soldier and left the position when he moved to the United States. He enjoys practicing jiu-jitsu when he is not working and attending church,” Stenkist added.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and the East Palo Alto Police Department allegedly warned Chief Stenquist about Gomez before he was hired. Both law enforcement agencies said they rejected his application due to arrests for domestic violence in 2017, KGO-TV It has been reported.

“The claim affidavit reviewed by the KGO allegedly claims that he is not a US citizen but has a US work permit for one year of marriage.

Officers at the time said he saw it. “A big bruise that covered (his wife's) left cheek and wound on her right cheek.”

“The state attorney reportedly allegedly claimed that his wife was hurt by hitting him first, and that she accused both her husband and wife of battery/domestic violence and eventually dropped the charges,” the report details detailed.

Prime Minister Stenquist told the outlet:Any communications of AST law enforcement that does not result in accusations will not disqualify itself under policy or applicable law. ”

Rich Colier, former San Francisco Police Department commander and recruiting director, retorted that while charges are often removed in such cases, the case should still be disqualified from being a police officer.

“We don't want anyone in a family environment. We know that violence is a place where they can escalate,” Koliair told the outlet. “You want the opposite. You want a natural de-escalator.”

Correia also suggested that hiring foreigners for law enforcement could be at risk as they may not fully understand how the American judicial system works.

“You better make sure you're hiring people who get a lot of nuances in the role of a police officer,” Koliea said. “As far as I know, no other person in our society has a gun and has the authority to shoot you in certain circumstances.”

Gomez is scheduled to attend San Mateo County Superior Court on May 21st to arrest him.
