Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett (D) is aiming for the leading Democratic position on the House Oversight Committee, as Rep. Jerry Connolly (D-VA) plans to step back.
Reportedly, on Thursday, Crockett was actively campaigning for the role among her fellow Democrats, utilizing text messages, emails, and discussions on the House floor. Although the position hasn’t officially opened yet, Connolly intends to resign to address a return of esophageal cancer.
Crockett expressed to her colleagues that she feels she is “made for now,” according to sources.
In a message to Politico, she noted, “We know Connolly isn’t seeking reelection, and it’s unclear how comprehensive our surveillance capabilities really are.”
She further mentioned, “While I’m sharing our findings and informing the public, I certainly don’t want to assume anyone is keen on leading the research agency.”
Should Crockett secure the position, it would signal a notable shift towards a younger, more progressive Democratic leadership, reminiscent of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
Crockett has established herself as a vocal critic of the Trump administration, recently likening a large-scale deportation initiative to temptation.
“In my view, you’re essentially luring people out and then abandoning them, violating their civil and constitutional rights,” she said in a recent Instagram video.
“And honestly, how would people feel if other nations started just tossing their citizens into our country? It’s completely absurd,” she added.
