MIAMI, Fla. — Lewis Hamilton’s choice to leave Mercedes after the 2024 Formula One season has left an open slot in the team. Meanwhile, both Antonelli and George Russell have secured one-year contracts, which means discussions about the Mercedes driver lineup for 2026 are now surfacing.
The outcomes on the track likely made things evident. Russell has landed on the podium in three out of five Grand Prix races this season, while Antonelli has also earned some accolades. Speculations revolving around Max Verstappen’s surprising moves have shifted towards potential expansions for both drivers.
During a Friday press conference in Miami, Toto Wolff, the head of the Mercedes team, hinted significantly at this. He suggested that Russell’s contract extension seems imminent. When asked about retaining Russell, Wolff remarked:
“George has always been part of the Mercedes family, and as I see it right now, why disrupt a team that’s on a path I consider positive?”
That wasn’t the only praise Wolff had for his drivers.
“George has really stepped up as a senior member of the team. There’s a camaraderie there. They support one another.”
“It’s not something you need to emphasize too much.”
“He’s always improving, and you can count on him for lap times and performance during races.”
Wolff also labeled Russell as a dependable driver, someone the team can “count on” when they need strong performances.
“I think it’ll be quite clear once the seven-time world champion departs the team.”
Speculation about driver shifts is a common part of life in Formula 1, especially with the recent buzz surrounding Hamilton’s potential move to Ferrari.
However, since Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until 2028 and the team is tirelessly working to provide a competitive edge for the championship, Mercedes has a young duo that is yielding current successes.
And there’s the promise of even better performances ahead.
