Vance and Rubio criticize Germany for calling the far-right party ‘extremist’

Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have made quite a statement regarding the German government by labeling the far-right Alternative for Germany (AFD) party as “radical.”

Rubio commented that Germany has granted its spy agencies new powers to keep an eye on the opposition, implying that this move is a deviation from true democracy. He went on to suggest that the real extremism lies not with the AFD, but rather in the government’s immigration policies. “Germany should turn the course back,” he stated in a post on the platform X.

This criticism from Rubio came shortly after Germany’s domestic intelligence agency classified the AFD as an extremist threat to democracy, which allows for increased surveillance of the party.

The designation was based on a comprehensive 1,000-page report from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which conducted a three-year investigation into the AFD. The report claimed that the party’s approach contradicts fundamental constitutional principles, including democratic values and human rights.

The intelligence agency’s assessment pointed out that the AFD’s focus on ethnic and ancestral definitions of the German people undermines a significant portion of the population and violates their dignity. It noted that these beliefs are evident in the party’s anti-immigration and anti-Muslim rhetoric.

Vance, who had previously met with AFD leader Alice Weidel ahead of Germany’s election, referred to the party as “the most popular party in Germany and the most representative of East Germany,” accusing bureaucrats of trying to undermine it.

He also remarked on the unity that marked the fall of the Berlin Wall, stating that it was rebuilt by German efforts, not by outsiders. He shared this sentiment in a post on X.

In response, the German Foreign Ministry addressed Rubio’s comments, emphasizing that their designation was the result of a thorough, independent investigation aimed at upholding the constitution and the rule of law. They reaffirmed that an independent court has the ultimate authority and highlighted the need to combat right-wing extremism, learning from historical precedents.
