Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representing New York, recently criticized the Trump administration during a town hall in Jackson Heights, Queens. She tackled issues ranging from freedom of speech to the administration’s spending cuts and immigration policies. At one point, she directly addressed Tom Homan, challenging him to “come for me.”
Following her speech at a May Day rally in New York City, Ocasio-Cortez continued her message of rejecting Trump’s policies, warning the audience that he might target Medicaid next.
The town hall, part of Ocasio-Cortez’s outreach in her district, maintained a progressive stance while addressing both local and national matters. However, Trump’s push for aggressive border security was a major point of contention.
Ocasio-Cortez was particularly vocal against the administration’s tactics regarding border security and immigration, which she labeled as “licensed lures” for Venezuelan gang members.
She recalled past comments from Homan, suggesting he had aimed to intimidate her for advising people about their rights. “I’ll come for me,” she said, reaffirming her stance on free speech.
She also condemned the Trump administration for what she termed “an attack on free speech,” and criticized the cuts to essential government programs. Ocasio-Cortez expressed concern over environmental issues being sidelined. “They just don’t seem to think climate change exists,” she asserted.
The event unfolded mostly without incident, but a group of protesters began shouting at Ocasio-Cortez, accusing her of complicity in what they called Gaza’s “genocide.” Their chants of “Shame! Shame!” echoed through the hall.
Despite her efforts to calm the crowd, Ocasio-Cortez faced anger from attendees. One protester shouted, “You’re a liar!” leaving the event feeling disillusioned, “I supported you,” the woman claimed as she exited.
Even with mixed emotions surrounding her, there are those who are excited about her potential presidential run in 2028. The notion of “AOC 2028” merchandise popping up at rallies speaks to this growing interest.
Fundraising efforts related to her name have been substantial, amassing $9.6 million over the last three months. Ocasio-Cortez’s team noted that the average donation was around $21, bolstered by contributions from 266,000 individual donors.
Expressing her gratitude, Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the energy and resources shared by supporters that enable her to organize and connect communities on a larger scale.
