Warning: This article contains graphic and disturbing details related to the Russian war in Ukraine.
The body of 27-year-old Viktoria Roshchyna is among the 757 deceased Ukrainian soldiers that were returned to Kiev on February 14, 2025. Reports indicate that she is a Russian captive, and her remains show clear signs of torture a year later.
Roshchyna, described as a dedicated journalist, had been captured by Russian forces and taken behind the front lines in August 2023.
When her body was retrieved along with many others, it’s noted that she was one of the few not properly identified. Instead, authorities labeled her simply as “unidentified male,” which is quite unsettling.
Russian assaults in Ukraine escalate amid crucial peace talks
Per a report by a notable news outlet, Roshchyna’s head was shaved, she bore burn marks on her legs, her ribs were fractured, and there were signs she had been subjected to electric shocks.
Investigations into her death revealed that some of her organs were missing, implying attempts to conceal the full extent of her torture, including parts of her brain, eyes, and trachea.
Yurii Bielousov, who leads the war crimes division for the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office, addressed the media about her case, stating that there were also indications of strangulation.
Interestingly, Russia did not acknowledge the capture of journalists until April 2024. In October of that year, Roshchyna’s father received a letter informing him of her death in custody.
Her body bore a mark from Russian officials noted as “Spa,” which they suggested referred to a supposed heart failure— an official designation some might find questionable.
The investigation suggests a situation of severe neglect and abuse for captives
Beersov, involved in the case, mentioned that the condition of her body made it challenging to determine a precise cause of death through forensic means.
Roshchyna’s parents have requested further examinations.
After her capture, she was initially held at a police station near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, where reports indicate the existence of a “torture chamber” used to inflict intense pain through various brutal methods.
Supposedly, Roshchyna endured electric shocks that were severe enough to be quite torturous.
Latterly, she was moved to another location where it’s believed she faced even greater abuse. After several months, she was sent to a pretrial detention center described by many as akin to a concentration camp.
Federal authorities confirm many detainees face similar fates
The investigation referred to her detention site as one of the most harrowing environments for Ukrainian prisoners, where neither legal representatives nor organizations like the UN were granted access.
It was reported that Roshchyna had gone on a hunger strike prior to being transported to a hospital. She was briefly stabilized before being returned to the detention center.
While there were intentions for her to be exchanged back to Ukraine in September 2024, that plan fell through for unclear reasons. Later, there were whispers that she passed away during the transfer back, yet details surrounding her final days remain murky.
