US runner Fred Kerley taken into custody for reportedly hitting ex-girlfriend | Athletics

Fred Carly, a two-time Olympic medalist in the 100m, was arrested after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, hurdler Aleisha Johnson. This incident means that American sprinters will not be participating in the Grand Slam Track event in Miami this weekend.

The reported altercation took place at a hotel on Thursday, where Johnson was present as a competitor and Carly was reportedly there as her conditioning coach. According to police reports, Johnson mentioned that Carly became aggressive and approached her, leading to him allegedly striking her in the face with a closed fist. The report noted that Johnson’s injuries matched her account, resulting in Carly, 29, being charged with “battery touch or strike.”

Attempts to reach Carly’s representative for comments were made but remain unanswered.

Carly, who secured a bronze medal in the 100m final at the 2024 Paris Games and a silver at the 2020 Tokyo Games, was set to compete in Miami this weekend.

The Grand Slam Track event confirmed the arrest, stating, “Fred Carly was arrested last night. The matter is under active investigation, and all inquiries should be directed to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Fred will not compete this weekend, and there are no additional comments at this time.”

Last month, Carly participated in his first Grand Slam Track competition in Kingston, Jamaica. This series, established by four-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson, aims to challenge the Diamond League, featuring 15 events yearly in various international cities.
