As dawn breaks at the Miami International Autodrome, the atmosphere buzzes, filled with anticipation on this Saturday of the Miami Grand Prix.
Could this finally be the moment for young Antonelli to shine?
On Friday, the Mercedes talent threw everyone for a loop—himself included—by clinching his first pole position in Formula 1 after a stunning performance in SQ3, marking a historic moment for him.
“I feel a bit bad for the moon,” Antonelli quipped. “I didn’t see this coming, but I felt great in the car today.”
“We really worked on consistency, and everything just clicked. I’m quite happy with our progress. We’re savoring this moment a bit, but our focus is on tomorrow; we want to keep this momentum going.”
Still, Antonelli faces a significant challenge today.
Joining him on the front row is Oscar Piastri, with McLaren teammate Lando Norris hot on his heels in P3. While Antonelli managed to squeeze out a great performance from the W16, holding off the two McLarens during the race will be no easy task, especially since simulations indicate the MCL39 has a slight advantage over the W16.
Piastri was on track for pole himself in SQ3 until a small lockup allowed Antonelli to take advantage at the last moment.
The real question now is, can Antonelli hold off the McLaren duo over 19 laps?
It might just boil down to the start and what unfolds in turn 1. Drivers have mentioned this week—and past races have shown—that starting in clean air can offer a notable edge. We saw Lewis Hamilton dominate a previous sprint race by taking pole and leading in clean air, finishing ahead of Piastri by six seconds and Verstappen by nearly ten.
If Antonelli can maintain his lead right off the starting line, he might just surprise everyone again in Miami.
However, if McLaren can navigate around him early on, it could lead to a tough battle for Antonelli.
