The individual who fell from the 21-foot Clemente Wall at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Wednesday has been identified as Kaban Markwood, a former college football player.
A representative from the South Allegheny School District confirmed that Markwood, 20, was indeed a student-athlete in their school system.
“Everyone in South Allegheny knows he is a hardworking, very resilient young man,” District Representative Laura Thomson said. “He’s a fighter, and he’ll need that resilience now more than ever.”
According to her, “He’s impacted many here in South Allegheny. It’s a tight-knit community, and he’s a familiar name to all. Everyone knows him.” The community has rallied together, offering prayers and support for him.

As of Thursday morning, Markwood remains in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital.
The fall occurred during the Pirates’ game against the Cubs. Markwood jumped from his seat in celebration after a hit by Pittsburgh outfielder Andrew McCutchen, and his momentum caused him to topple over the railing.
Medical staff from both teams worked alongside paramedics to stabilize Markwood for transport.
Markwood, who played linebacker at Wheeling University in 2023, was fondly remembered by his coach in discussions with TMZ Sports.
“He was an excellent young man,” former Wheeling coach Zach Bruney remarked.
“Kaban isn’t just a great athlete; he’s also an exceptional person,” said Frank Cortazzo, head football coach at South Allegheny High School. “His resilience, heart, and strength are truly remarkable. Please keep him, his family, and friends in your thoughts as they navigate this tough time.”
Andrew McCutchen expressed his sorrow at the situation on social media after the game.
“I really hate what happened tonight,” he noted. “Think about him, his family, and friends. Pray for him tonight. Hold your loved ones a little tighter. I hope he pulls through.”
