Mike Tirico has stepped down from his position as NBC’s host for the Kentucky Derby after experiencing an allergic reaction to nuts.
Ahmed Fareed filled in for Tirico, who had been hosting the Derby for nine years. During Saturday’s broadcast, Fareed shared that Tirico had a nut allergy and had had a reaction earlier that day.
“He’s okay now,” Fareed mentioned, “but he’ll be taking on a side role.”
It appears Tirico is feeling “under the weather” and has temporarily withdrawn from NBC’s Derby coverage. Fareed stepped into the role while Tirico recuperates.
Tirico became a prominent voice for NBC’s Derby coverage since 2017, also serving as the host for “Sunday Night Football.” He’s expected to take up a leading role at the NBA gaming network when they gain broadcasting rights for next season.
He traveled to Churchill Downs and participated prominently in the network’s coverage leading up to the Derby.
On Friday, Tirico joined Kay Adams for an interview on the “Up & Adams” show, discussing topics like the Kentucky Derby and the uncertain future of Aaron Rodgers.
Fareed took over for about an hour during the NBC coverage. Social media users noted they could sense something unusual in Tirico’s voice during the broadcast.
In the announcement during the broadcast, Fareed left the possibility open for Tirico’s return if he feels better, later updating viewers on the situation regarding allergies.
Fareed explained, “The weather has been a bit rough, so you’ll hear some interference.” He added, “It’s not like baseball; the starter can jump back into the game if needed.”
NBC shared a clip on social media from Tirico’s behind-the-scenes tour of the studio at Churchill Downs.
Journalism has celebrated the 151st running of the Derby, marking the start of the Triple Crown schedule, alongside favorites like Sovereignty and Sandman.
