Kimi Antonelli’s beginning in the Miami Grand Prix should alert the competition.

Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix: Sprint Race Insights

MIAMI, Fla. – Even though Kimi Antonelli started the sprint race from pole position, things didn’t quite unfold as expected at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix.

The young Mercedes driver still has the chance to rack up more points tomorrow, despite the challenges.

Antonelli lost his lead to Oscar Piastri during the sprint race and ended up finishing seventh. However, he bounced back by qualifying in third place, trailing only pole sitter Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Randon Ross.

On Friday, Antonelli expressed his excitement about starting from pole. After qualifying on Saturday, he shared with the media how pleased he was to turn things around following a “disappointing” morning.

“Yeah, it’s been a decent weekend so far. The morning wasn’t ideal, but it felt great to recover like this. We didn’t have as clean a run as yesterday, but that final lap was solid. Maybe I was a bit too ambitious at the start of the lap,” he explained.

Not only was Antonelli satisfied with his performance, but he also expressed confidence in the W16, the team’s car for the upcoming season.

“Absolutely,” Antonelli replied when asked if he was enjoying the car. “I’m learning and gaining experience every weekend, which boosts my confidence. I’m really happy to be pushing my limits in the car this weekend. I’ve felt good about our setup, so I’m optimistic about the race tomorrow.”

While he encountered issues with the Grand Prix “target,” Antonelli stated that he aims for a strong race pace.

“Things can go sideways easily, so I won’t make any bold claims! My focus is on starting well and maintaining a good pace alongside Max and Rand,” he noted.

“It’s not straightforward. Plus, the weather could play a role with potential thunderstorms. We’ll just have to see how it unfolds. We’ve had a good sense of pace during FP1, so we’ll try to gather solid data on drying conditions and aim for a competitive race,” he added.

For the rest of the grid, it might be a bit unsettling that this is Antonelli’s sixth F1 race, and he’s competing at the Miami Grand Prix for the first time.

Looking ahead to the European races, where he has more familiarity, Antonelli stated, “There’s still space to grow, but I’ve been feeling progressively better each weekend. Post this week, I’ll be racing on tracks I know well in Europe, and hopefully, I can either maintain or improve my pace.”

Imagine that.
