Pirates supporter ‘aware and attentive’ after tumbling onto the field in a fall

A 20-year-old man is reportedly alert after falling over 20 feet during a game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. This incident involved Kaban Markwood, a former college football player who fell into the warning track while watching a game between the Pirates and the Chicago Cubs.

Markwood lost his balance, flipped over the railing, and landed on the field. Following the fall, medical teams rushed onto the field and found him lying face down in the dirt. They swiftly attended to him and transported him away in a medical cart.

A GoFundMe campaign was started earlier this week to help cover his medical expenses, and its organizers recently shared positive news about Markwood’s condition. “We’re relieved and grateful to update you all. This morning, he was able to wake up, seem alert, and even speak,” wrote Jennifer Phillips. She added that despite the long road to recovery ahead, these small milestones feel miraculous.

The fall interrupted the game for about ten minutes as players and fans processed the situation. During this time, Pirates star Andrew McCutchen had just hit a two-run double to narrow the score to 4-3. A video shared on social media captured the moment of Markwood’s fall, showing him tumbling over the railing, which visibly shocked both players and fans alike.

Markwood had played football at two different Division II universities—Walsh University and Wheeling University—where he participated in several games during the 2023 season.

In light of the accident, McCutchen expressed his heartbreak over the event on social media. He urged people to keep Markwood and his loved ones in their thoughts, reminding everyone to cherish their families a bit more that night.
