Pakistan’s Defence Minister Issues Caution to India

Pakistan’s Warnings Amid Rising Tensions with India

In Islamabad, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has issued a stark warning regarding potential Indian actions that may contravene the Indus Water Treaty, especially concerning constructions on the Indus River. This warning comes on the heels of deteriorating relations between the two nations, particularly following the terrorist attacks in Pahargam on April 22.

The aftermath of these attacks saw India announce a halt to the 1960 treaty among other punitive measures, creating significant strain.

During a recent program on GEO News, Asif asserted, “It’s true, if they’re going to build all sorts of structures, we’ll hit it.” He emphasized that any construction on the Indus would be viewed as a direct aggression by India against Pakistan.

He further elaborated, stating, “Attack isn’t just about firing cannons and bullets. There are many faces. One of those faces is [blocking or diverting water], which can lead to death from hunger and thirst.” The Defense Minister firmly declared, “If they try to build, Pakistan will destroy its structure.”

Amidst these escalating tensions, Pakistan is reportedly preparing to officially notify India regarding its unilateral decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty. This strategy follows consultations among various Pakistani ministries, including diplomacy and water resources, as reported by the Express Tribune.

On a separate note, Pakistan conducted a training launch of its Abdali missile system, capable of reaching distances of up to 450 km, on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a meeting with top defense officials on April 29, reiterated India’s commitment to responding decisively against those responsible for the Pahargam attacks, asserting that the military has “full operational freedom” concerning its response strategy.
