‘Elsbeth’ EP Jonathan Tolins Addresses Confusion About Carra Patterson’s Alleged Departure: “I Want To Be Clear: She Is Not Leaving”

There’s been quite the shocking twist in Elsbeth, the popular CBS procedural featuring Carrie Preston. Kara Patterson, who plays Detective Kaya Blanke, is stepping back from her role. This came as a surprise to fans who witnessed her character’s conclusion in a dramatic episode on Thursday night.

In that episode, Kaya accepts a position on the undercover task force while Elsbeth, portrayed by Preston, faces legal issues. Both the executive producer and showrunner Jonathan Tolins have addressed rumors about Patterson’s exit, emphasizing that her character will still exist in the show’s universe, but she won’t always be a regular presence. “I want to make that clear: she’s not leaving,” Tolins asserted. “Kaya’s character remains, but she won’t be beside Elsbeth all the time.” It seems the writers enjoy the idea of Elsbeth navigating her challenges independently.

This shift is a bold move for the show, keeping viewers on their toes. Recently, the series also wrote off Judge Milton Crawford, which left many fans surprised, especially in light of expectations surrounding the season 2 finale.

While the reasons for Patterson’s reduced role weren’t fully discussed, Tolins mentioned that they felt the character had reached a significant milestone in becoming a detective within just two seasons.

Preston shared insights about Kaya’s changing role. She likened this transition to her character’s early journey to New York, highlighting how both characters strive for reinvention. As seen in her previous roles on shows like A Good Wife and A Good Fight, she now portrays a quirky lawyer who moves to the city to pursue new opportunities in her career with the NYPD.

“One of the themes I love in the show is about women reinventing themselves, particularly at points in their lives when they really don’t have to,” she remarked. “Kaya’s journey parallels that beautifully.”

Preston believes that Kaya’s exit will add an interesting dynamic to the upcoming season. “She’ll always be part of Elsbeth’s life and someone she cherishes,” Preston stated. “Elsbeth wants her friends to succeed and find happiness, even if it means pathways diverging.”

Patterson also acknowledged her transition, expressing gratitude to her fans and colleagues. “This isn’t a goodbye; it’s a new adventure. I can’t wait to return as ‘Detective Kaya’ next season to collaborate with Carrie and Wendell,” she said in a recent Instagram post.

The first 19 episodes of Elsbeth Season 2 are currently available on Paramount+. The season finale is set to air on Thursday, May 8th, at 9 PM.
