Oscar Piastri’s journey from the starting grid to claiming victory at the Miami Grand Prix highlighted his status as a serious contender for the championship. With a commanding performance, he secured McLaren’s win, reinforcing his position in a competitive title race and making a statement in Florida.
Having missed out on the sprint race win on Saturday, Piastri’s determination led him to outpace his teammate, Lando Norris, who finished second. They both competed fiercely against Max Verstappen, who fell to sixth place as the race began. Piastri executed an impressive move from sixth to clinch a remarkable victory, while Verstappen could only manage fourth, trailing George Russell in a Mercedes and witnessing Alex Albon finish impressively in fifth for Williams.
Lewis Hamilton struggled again, looking for better results with Ferrari, and had another challenging day on the radio with his team.
This season, Piastri has consistently shown strength, achieving his fourth victory at this race, solidifying his spot in the championship battle. Currently, he leads Norris by 16 points, and Verstappen by 32 points.
Driving at his peak, Piastri maintained his composure even while being pursued by Norris, showcasing remarkable confidence. The gap he built over the rest of the field was astounding. With clear air ahead, both drivers distanced themselves, allowing Piastri to finish a staggering 37 seconds ahead of Russell.
For Norris, the race didn’t start well. Verstappen gained the lead at turn one but then locked up, which allowed Piastri to pass right after. The two put on an exciting show, but after 14 laps, Piastri ultimately overtook Verstappen, using the time wisely to create a nine-second cushion over Norris.
“Max put up a good fight, and I paid the price,” Norris remarked.
Qualifying had been disappointing for the Australians. However, during the race, both drivers leveraged McLaren’s pace effectively.
Once he got past Verstappen after a tough battle, Piastri demonstrated just how much his team had progressed. “Two years ago, we were the slowest team in Miami, and I think we got lapped twice. Winning the Grand Prix by over 35 seconds now is incredible,” he reflected.
This victory marked a stunning achievement for Piastri, being his fourth win in six races this season and the third overall in his Formula 1 career.
In contrast, Hamilton and Ferrari faced a less successful outing. Once again, he and Charles Leclerc narrowly missed the podium, battling Carlos Sainz from Williams. Although Hamilton showed speed, Ferrari moved Leclerc into seventh place after Hamilton expressed frustration with their decision. His irritated response was, “Please take a break from tea while you’re at it.”
Lando was then instructed to relinquish his position later in the race. When Sainz approached, Hamilton’s reply dripped with irony, “Do you want him to be in the past too?” This strained relationship with Scuderia seems to be persisting.
Despite Verstappen and Red Bull finding better setups for their cars this weekend, McLaren asserted themselves as the class of the field, particularly in tire management. Piastri has also shown he can match Norris, defying expectations from last season, and his ability in qualifying and tire management gives him an edge in the title race.
Miami usually offers a vibrant atmosphere. Before the race, the drivers created a full-size Lego replica of a car using 400,000 blocks, which garnered much attention. Yet, when it came to actual racing, Piastri firmly established his dominance in the championship scene.
