Tomatoes recalled because of salmonella threat: ‘Do not eat’

Tomato Recall Due to Potential Salmonella Contamination

A company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, is recalling “4 count ripe tomatoes” sold in clamshell containers over concerns that they might be contaminated with salmonella.

Ray & Mascari Inc. has made this announcement, which can be found on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.

The affected tomatoes were distributed to Gordon Food Service locations across 11 states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

Salmonella can lead to severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations like young children, the elderly, or others with weakened immune systems. The recall notice details that “healthy individuals infected with salmonella often present symptoms such as fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.”

In rare cases, salmonella infections might escalate, allowing bacteria to enter the bloodstream and result in more serious health conditions, including infections of the arteries, endocarditis, and arthritis.

According to Ray & Mascari, they were alerted to the situation by Hanshaw & Coupling Farm located in Florida, leading to the recall of the tomatoes they had received and repackaged as four-count servings.

Hanshaw & Coupling Farms stated that “we have initiated a recall due to the possibility of salmonella presence in our facility.”

The notification indicates that customers who received the affected products have been contacted with further instructions to reach the customer service and distribution center for recall guidance.

The tomatoes are packaged in a plastic clamshell containing four individual tomatoes. The recall applies to clamshells labeled as “Vine Ripe Tomatoes” packed in a box (number 46204) by Ray & Mascari Inc.

The master case cartons hold 12 clamshells and display either lot #RM250424 15250B or lot #RM250427 15250B on their labels.

So far, no illnesses related to this recall have been reported. Customers who have purchased this product are advised not to dispose of it but to refrain from consuming it. If anyone receives inquiries regarding illness, they are encouraged to contact Ray & Mascari Inc. during regular business hours.
