Former President Donald Trump has proposed the reconstruction of the notorious Alcatraz prison in San Francisco, California, aiming to transform it into a facility for the country’s most dangerous criminals.
He shared this plan on Truth Social on Sunday evening, exclaiming, “Rebuilding and Open Alcatraz!” Trump expressed concerns about the current state of society, remarking that America has been suffering from an increase in violent crime and has failed to adequately contain repeat offenders.
In his message, he noted that in the past, the nation was more resolute in detaining dangerous criminals and maintaining distance from those who pose risks to public safety. “We will no longer tolerate these serial criminals who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets,” he declared.
Trump further stated that he has instructed various government agencies, including the Justice Department and the FBI, to start planning for this revamped Alcatraz. He emphasized that this prison would symbolize law, order, and justice, advocating for a strong stance against crime.
Alcatraz, which initially opened in 1934, was closed almost three decades later in 1963 due to its high operational costs. Located on a rocky island about 1.25 miles from the mainland, it was viewed as nearly escape-proof, yet 14 documented escapes were recorded, the most famous being that of John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, and Frank Morris in 1962. Their fate remains uncertain, as the FBI suggested harsh conditions likely led to their downfall.
Historically, the prison was home to notorious criminals like Al Capone and “Whitey” Bulger, earning a reputation as an inescapable stronghold. Today, Alcatraz is a well-known tourist destination, managed by the National Park Service, drawing visitors intrigued by its storied past.
