ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith has expressed strong feelings about the current Democratic Party, suggesting that a change is necessary for him to feel aligned with them. During an appearance on CNN’s “Coalition State” with Jake Tupper, he mentioned that he’s been considering the possibility of a presidential run in 2028, admitting his dissatisfaction with the Democrats’ direction.
Smith noted, “I’m not happy with Democrats, so the Democrats currently being built will need to be cleansed to make me want to be associated with them.” He’s been contemplating this for a while now, fueled by what he considers a “pathetic” performance from the Democrats in the previous election cycle.
He conveyed that he is intrigued by the potential to win a future election, stating that he’s received encouragement from elected officials and other prominent figures. He pointed out that Democrats are misguidedly harming the country through policies like high spending and identity politics. “You literally scare people into silence,” he remarked, referring to the hypersensitivity around language in today’s discussions.
Moreover, Smith mentioned that the average American desires a peaceful life, worried mainly about practical issues like mortgage payments and the cost of groceries. He criticized both political parties for neglecting the real concerns of their constituents, emphasizing that they often focus on empty rhetoric rather than tangible solutions.
While he affirmed that he doesn’t see himself as necessarily prepared for the presidency, he acknowledged that his pastor advised him to keep the option open, especially for those who support him. “Looking at our politics, how bad can we do?” he questioned, hinting at the frustrations many share about the current political climate.
