21-year-old Berkeley student left paralyzed from the waist down after a heartbreaking fall at a fraternity party.

Tragic Fraternity Fall Leaves UC Berkeley Student Paralyzed

A student from the University of California, Berkeley, is now paralyzed from the waist down after a tragic fall at a fraternity party just weeks before graduation.

Bandna Bhatti, 21, slipped down an exterior metal staircase at the Phi Kappa Tau House around 1 p.m. on April 19. Many are rallying around her, as expressed by friends who shared that she had just been three weeks away from earning her degree in data science. They say this was a milestone she had worked incredibly hard for, and then, in a flash, everything changed.

“We received the kind of news no family wants to hear,” her friend Sonya said, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Bandna fell at least 12 feet into a narrow area and struck her head during the fall. A friend found her and she remained on the ground for about 15 minutes before being moved. According to her family, those who were at the fraternity reportedly told her friend that they needed to leave. Not knowing how serious Bandna’s injuries were, her friend took her to a nearby apartment instead.

It took seven hours before 911 was called, as reported by local authorities.

Besides the spinal fracture that has left her paralyzed, her injuries include spinal fluid leakage and multiple fractures. Her sister shared on a GoFundMe page that she is currently hospitalized.

This unfortunate incident occurred during CAL Day, an annual open house for prospective students and their families.

Authorities are currently looking into the incident but haven’t released detailed information about their findings.

The university has reached out to offer support to affected students. They acknowledged being aware of the ongoing investigation into the reported injuries.

In a statement, Matt Arnold, CEO of the National Phi Kappa Tau organization, noted that the fraternity is committed to supporting the individuals and families during this challenging time. “The health, safety, and well-being of everyone in our community are our top priorities,” he added.

Meanwhile, a close friend of Bandna participated in a half marathon, aiming to raise funds for her recovery. “Bandna is a caring and resilient person who has been dedicated to her dreams. Now, she faces a long road ahead,” reads the GoFundMe page.

Her mother expressed her determination, tearing up as she promised, “I’ll walk again.” “She’s walking,” she insisted. “I will do whatever it takes.”
