Our Last Season 2 Episode 4 provides clarity on the relationship between “Best Friends” Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabella Merced). By the episode’s end, they finally share their truths and emotions with one another, leading to a genuine and intense moment for both characters, who, I suppose, are building to something more. Isabella Merced, who plays Dina, feels that “a long time will come” for these characters.

This episode takes a thrilling turn as Ellie and Dina confront their near-death experience upon arriving in Seattle. They recognize the familiar, abandoned music store, a known location, but the setting feels off. Here, Ramsey captures the nostalgia of the “Take on Me” moment, which Dina finds captivating.
As they navigate the city on a mission to locate Abby (Katelyn Dever) and her group, they find themselves in a tense situation. After encountering the WLF team, they seek refuge in an underground tunnel, only to discover it’s overrun with threats. In the ensuing chaos, Ellie sacrifices herself to save Dina and gets bitten, prompting fears in Dina that she may need to end Ellie’s life before she turns.
“I was really eager about the scene,” Merced shared in an interview this week, describing its significance and placement in the narrative.
“It feels intense and spontaneous, but the details—from the positioning of the jacket to their movements—were carefully crafted,” she added.
Merced emphasized the intention of ensuring their actions felt true to the characters. They aimed to portray “physical consent, not verbal” in their scene. “At one point, I think I nod. I tried to guide Ellie’s hand down. Everything was thought out,” she noted.
Additionally, Merced discussed how Dina’s hesitation to express her feelings stems from her understanding of her own sexuality. “She assumes she’s straight,” she remarked.
“I don’t see it as manipulative; it feels spontaneous yet destined,” she reflected on their connection. “It’s clear they have a genuine, romantic draw to one another.”
Merced confirmed that there’s been a palpable tension between Dina and Ellie leading up to this moment. “Yeah, it certainly existed,” she admitted. “It felt like a long time coming.”
Now that Ellie and Dina are a couple, they face the looming conflict in Seattle, with Abby still around. Will their relationship strengthen their missions, or could it lead to even more heartache given the violence surrounding them?
The next episode of Our Last will air on May 11th at 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.
