Trump and Erdogan talking about ways to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict

On Monday, President Trump had a phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding efforts to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the talks as “very good and productive,” addressing issues related to Syria and Gaza, alongside the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

During the conversation, Trump noted that he was invited to visit Turkey, while he extended an invitation for Erdogan to come to Washington.

“In any case, I look forward to collaborating with President Erdogan to address this ridiculous, yet deadly war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump mentioned in his post.

As a NATO member, Turkey has been attempting to balance its relationships with both Ukraine and Russia throughout the conflict.

Recently, Trump has shown continued optimism about the potential for a deal to halt the fighting in Ukraine, which escalated following Russia’s invasion in February 2022 when they amassed troops along the border.

However, Trump and other officials have recognized that without significant progress, the U.S. might withdraw from mediation attempts.

“We think we’re close to one side, but we may not be as close with the other parties. We need to see,” Trump stated during an interview on “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday. “Right now, about 5,000 soldiers are dying every week. They’re not American soldiers, but I want to find a solution.”
