Six U.S. governors ask six Canadian premiers to discuss tariffs in Boston.

Governors from Northeastern US Invite Canadian Premiers to Discuss Tariffs

Governors from six states in the northeastern U.S. have reached out to the premiers of six Canadian provinces, inviting them to Boston to discuss how tariffs are impacting both sides. This invitation comes in light of President Trump’s controversial tariff policies affecting imports from Canada and other nations, which have sparked debate in both the U.S. and abroad.

The group of governors consists of five Democrats, including Massachusetts Governor Maureen Janet Mills, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee, along with one Republican, Vermont Governor Phil Scott.

These governors aim to engage with the premiers from New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec. A recent press release highlighted their intention to strengthen relationships based not just on economic interests but also on longstanding family and cultural connections.

In their statement, they noted, “While the international fuss over tariffs threatens to overturn the economy of each community, we write to reaffirm our friendship and unique interdependence. We hope to maintain an open line of communication and cooperation and identify pathways to handle these uninvited tariff challenges.”

On another note, Trump recently met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Kearney, where topics of annexation were raised. When asked if he would consider making Canada the 51st state, Trump mentioned, “I always talk about it,” stating that the economic dependency on Canadian goods doesn’t warrant the need for Canadian energy.

Governor Mills, reflecting on the situation, expressed concern that the president’s unpredictable tariff policies and negative rhetoric are straining the cultural and economic ties between the two nations.
