Kentucky Derby champion Sovereignty will not compete in the Preakness.

Sovereignty will not compete in the Preakness Stakes.

The horse that won the 2025 Kentucky Derby is set to focus entirely on the upcoming Belmont Stakes in Saratoga next month.

“We got a call from trainer Bill Mott earlier today informing us that Sovereignty won’t participate in the Preakness. Instead, we’re aiming for the Belmont,” stated Mike Rogers, executive vice president of 1/ST, which runs the Preakness.

The Mott team, along with sovereignty’s connections, has our support regarding this decision. It’s clear there’s a growing anticipation for the 150th anniversary of the Preakness Stakes.

Mott had earlier mentioned that Sovereignty had a minor issue with his right front hoof, but it remains uncertain if this will affect his participation in the rest of the Triple Crown series.

Sovereignty triumphed over the favorite, Journalism, during the muddy conditions at Churchill Downs last Saturday.

It’s worth noting that Justify was the most recent horse to claim the Triple Crown back in 2018, three years after American Pharoah made history as the first horse to win it since its declaration in 1978. Both were trained by Bob Baffert.
