The Impact of Cancellation Culture
The phenomenon of cancellation has been upended by the unexpected arrival of death. The promises made by large tech companies were about connection, information, and convenience. However, the reality seems to guide us toward a surveillance state, where even the most unbearable members of society hold the power to monitor their neighbors for merely voicing unpopular opinions. Or perhaps they just seem to lack the right kind of loyalty to groups that have historically faced marginalization, now simultaneously holding positions of power.
Picture a scenario involving “viral racist incidents.” Individuals are secretly recorded by those who accuse them, leading to a bombardment of accusations aimed at shaming and humiliating the person. This cycle of humiliation multiplies exponentially as videos start circulating on social media. The accused may face termination from their jobs or expulsion from their communities. In response, they often issue desperate apologies, which are, of course, typically dismissed, forcing them into the shadows of their lives. Meanwhile, the mob returns to their scrolling.
