Stephen A. Smith Explores Acting Career
Stephen A. Smith is exploring a new side of himself in the acting world. Colleagues have often noted that when the spotlight hits, he transforms—almost like a different person. In a recent interview, he reflected on his journey toward making a name for himself on primetime television.
Famous for his energetic and theatrical style as a sports analyst on ESPN, Smith is set to guest star in an episode of “Law & Order,” which airs on NBC at 8 PM. He expressed pride in the feedback he’s received over the years: “When the lights turn on, he’s another animal. He’s ready,” he shared, emphasizing that he’s always prepared to step up when it’s showtime.
Imagining a different persona can be a challenge, but in the episode titled “Tough Love,” he takes on the role of Ted Hunter, a bold sports agent entangled in some drama.
Smith described the experience as “crazy,” noting how his background in sports journalism has informed his understanding of agents, but playing a character on camera still requires a significant shift in mindset.
Interestingly, he hasn’t taken formal acting classes or received any acting training. The opportunity came about when Pam Wexler, a writer for “Law & Order,” reached out to him. He recounted the moment: “She was a fan, and her colleagues were fans too, wondering if I’d be interested in appearing. I said, ‘Are you kidding me? Absolutely!’” This excitement fueled his decision to jump into the role.
Smith made a brief cameo in “General Hospital” back in 2007 and appeared in Chris Rock’s film “I Think I Love My Wife.” Most recently, he returned to “General Hospital” as a character named Brick and has continued to make appearances over the years.
As he looks to further his acting career, Smith made it clear that he isn’t ready to give up his position at ESPN. He signed a hefty contract extension with the network, further emphasizing that he requires the right acting opportunity to consider a shift in focus.
“If something great comes along, I’m open to it, but I’m not abandoning my work,” he said. He dreams of being part of epic productions alongside talented actors and directors—goals he’s determined to pursue while balancing his existing commitments.
Reflecting on his time in the industry, he expressed gratitude to veteran actors like Maurice Benard from “General Hospital,” who have shared insights with him about the craft. He recalled, “When I went to film my ‘Law & Order’ scene, I was guided by what they’ve taught me over the years. I’m really thankful for their mentorship.”
