AOC’s Decision to Skip a Major Committee Position Might Indicate She’s Considering a 2028 Campaign, According to Chris Cillizza

Political Analysis on Ocasio-Cortez’s Aspirations

On Tuesday, political analyst Chris Cillizza discussed why he thinks Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is weighing a presidential run in 2028. Ocasio-Cortez recently indicated to reporters that she wouldn’t pursue a significant role in the House Oversight Committee, implying that seniority matters might impede her position, according to reports from Politico.

Cillizza shared his thoughts on YouTube, suggesting that Ocasio-Cortez’s choice and her surrounding commentary hint at a shift towards greater ambition. He expressed confidence in her potential to move beyond Congress and possibly eye the presidential election. “I think she’s feeling frustrated,” he noted. “Whether you agree with her or not, she has that star quality, and it shows she’s capable of competing at high levels.” He pointed out that her decision not to seek the committee role doesn’t necessarily secure her another position but seems to indicate a desire to run for president in 2028.

Cillizza mentioned that Ocasio-Cortez might also consider a Senate run, but similar seniority issues could arise in that scenario. “If you’re watching closely, it seems she’s hinting at 2028. She raised millions in just three months, and her recent video after joining a tour with Bernie Sanders felt like a progressive rallying cry for 2028,” he added, suggesting that she might prefer the presidency over staying in Congress.

He believes that if Ocasio-Cortez does run, she could be a formidable candidate for the presidency.

In a CNN/SSRS poll conducted in March, Ocasio-Cortez received notable backing from Democratic-leaning adults regarding which leader embodies the party’s core values. However, NewsNation host Chris Cuomo voiced skepticism about her potential candidacy on his podcast, stating that she hasn’t made substantial contributions in Congress and primarily operates through social media. He criticized her approach, labeling her a “socialist in a capitalist society” while expressing doubts about her overall effectiveness.
