Incident Involving United Airlines Planes in San Francisco
Early Tuesday, a right wing tip of a United Airlines aircraft collided with the left wing tip of another United plane in San Francisco, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The FAA indicated that this incident occurred while one flight was being pushed back from the gates of the San Francisco International Airport. Specifically, the right wing of one plane struck the left wing of United Airlines Flight 877, which was preparing to take off. At the same time, Flight 863 was heading to Sydney, Australia, and Flight 877 was bound for Hong Kong, China. This incident happened around 12:35 AM on May 6th, and the FAA has opened an investigation.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. A statement from United Airlines confirmed that both aircraft were involved in a contact situation during the pushback. Passengers from both flights were eventually rebooked without incident.
Interestingly, this occurrence comes on the heels of a separate incident last month, where lawmakers on an American Airlines flight experienced a similar situation, with another plane striking theirs while stationary on the runway.
While flying can sometimes involve unexpected moments like this, thankfully, all involved remained safe. Just a reminder that aviation, despite being generally safe, can occasionally have these unusual incidents.
