Few non-homeowners expect to buy home in next five years: Survey

A recent poll indicates that a sizable number of non-homeowners don’t foresee purchasing a home anytime soon. According to a new Gallup survey, only 25% of non-homeowners believe they will buy a house within the next five years. A mere 5% expect to make a purchase within the next year, while 23% think it might happen in the next decade. Meanwhile, 45% of respondents expressed doubt about ever achieving homeownership, and 2% had no opinion.

As President Trump entered his second term, economic concerns among consumers began to rise, largely attributed to his tariff policies. His aggressive stance on tariffs seems to be unsettling markets globally, causing friction with key allies including Canada and the European Union.

During this term, housing matters seem to be overshadowed by foreign policy and immigration issues. The President’s actions, especially those regarding heightened tariffs and deportations, could create challenges and expenses for American homeowners.

The Gallup poll also revealed that 57% of respondents believe home prices in their area will increase over the next year. In contrast, 28% expect home prices to remain stable, while 13% think they will decrease.

Conducted from April 1 to April 14, the Gallup survey included responses from 1,006 individuals, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. Among the 272 non-homeowners surveyed, the sampling error for that group is plus or minus 8 percentage points.
