UnitedHealth hid the impact of negative reactions to CEO Brian Thompson’s death on profits: shareholder lawsuit

UnitedHealth Group faced a lawsuit on Wednesday amid negative reactions following the murder of its CEO, Brian Thompson. This incident has reportedly impacted the company’s business operations and inventory levels, especially after insurance firms adjusted their earnings forecasts for 2025.

A proposed class action lawsuit was filed in federal court in Manhattan, where shareholders accused the company of misleading them about the financial consequences of strategies that had previously resulted in an unusual number of claim denials.

On April 17, UnitedHealth’s stock plummeted by 22%, erasing roughly $119 billion in market value, as insurers revised their expected earnings per share for 2025 from a range of $29.50-$30 down to $26.50.

The backdrop to this turmoil included insurers citing rising costs within their Medicare business, with predictions already issued just a day before Thompson’s death.

Shareholders expressed discontent, arguing that UnitedHealth had previously hyped its share price without properly addressing the fallout from its outdated projections. They referred to a Senate report that raised concerns about the firm’s handling of claim denials.

As of now, UnitedHealth has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. The company maintains offices in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Washington, DC.

The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages for shareholders from December 3, 2024, to April 16, 2025.

Meanwhile, Luigi Mangione, who has been linked to Thompson’s murder, is facing the possibility of the death penalty after pleading not guilty. Interestingly, he has gained support from some individuals frustrated with for-profit health insurance companies.

This case is being heard in the United States District Court, Southern District of New York, under the title Faller v. UnitedHealth Group Inc et al, No. 25-03799.
