A cadre of Republican lawmakers has urged President Trump to take “immediate and decisive action” as the wildfire season approaches.
Leading the group, Sen. Tim Sheehee (R-Mont.) emphasized the need for intervention as wildfires are already impacting various communities and the environment across the U.S. The letter, co-signed by Sheehee and 16 other Republicans, was initially reported by Semafor.
“We write to express our strong support for executive action to address the escalating wildfire crisis threatening our nation,” the letter states.
The lawmakers noted that while wildfire season typically kicks off in May, this year is already shaping up to be “one of the worst on record.”
“Immediate and decisive action is crucial, and we back an administration that takes sensible steps to safeguard the American public,” they asserted.
The letter highlights the fragmented nature of federal wildfire response, noting the lack of a clear authority responsible for combating fires and protecting communities. They pointed out the existence of “bureaucratic hurdles and redundancy” within agencies that impede timely responses to wildfires.
“Adopt a more streamlined approach to wildfire management, utilize cutting-edge technology, ensure our dedicated Wildland firefighters have the necessary tools and support for safe and effective operations, and enable quick deployment of essential resources when tackling Wildland fires,” the letter suggests. Such changes, they argue, could significantly benefit responses throughout the summer.
While some system improvements would need Congressional approval, the lawmakers believe that actions taken by Trump may offer the “most immediate path” to progress.
“We stand ready to support your leadership in shielding our American communities from the ravaging effects of wildfires,” the letter concludes.
This correspondence includes signatures from Republican representatives hailing from states such as Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Wyoming.
