House Republicans Push for Death Penalty for Illegal Immigrant Murderers
House Republicans are working on a proposal that would enforce the death penalty for illegal immigrants convicted of murder across all states. Representative Morgan Luttrell from Texas is set to introduce a bill named “Judges for Victims of Illegal Foreign Murder.” The legislation is aimed at imposing life sentences or the death penalty for those found guilty of first-degree murder.
This proposed bill could enhance federal prosecutors’ authority to prosecute such crimes, even in states where capital punishment is not in effect. “We can hold those individuals accountable at the federal level because they are illegal here. And here we are in the law,” Luttrell mentioned in a conversation with Fox News before the announcement.
He noted that part of what pushed this bill forward was an incident in 2023 where a man who had been repeatedly deported was arrested for taking the lives of five Americans. “That guy was supposed to be here too. He had been deported several times and creeped up across the border. And now this has happened. It’s time for us to intervene and do this,” he said.
The initiative also reflects some influence from former President Donald Trump, who had previously signed an executive order mandating the death penalty for particular crimes involving illegal immigrants. According to Luttrell, he hopes to gain some Democratic support for this bill as well.
“I don’t run away from those conversations at all because I think it’s necessary. It shows the Americans that we’re working on this. The Americans voted for this administration because of the border,” he explained. The legislation has already garnered backing from seven Republican co-sponsors in the House, including Chairman August Pfluger from Texas.
